The experience

The tour starts with a pickup from your hotel in Erfoud at 5pm and heads south by 4WD toward Merzouga, about an hour's drive. On the way you stop at a nomad family's tent to see how they live in the desert. Once you reach the dunes near Merzouga, you switch from the vehicle to camels for a ride that lasts roughly an hour, timed so you reach the high ground as the sun sets over the sand.

After the camel ride, the 4WD takes you to a desert camp where you'll spend the evening. You get a traditional Berber dinner cooked on-site, then settle around a campfire for live music: drums, singing, and the quiet of the desert around you. Bottled water and a turban are provided. Once the music winds down, the 4WD drives you back to your hotel in Erfoud, arriving late in the evening.

Groups of up to four travel in one 4WD. If you're larger, the operator books a second vehicle so everyone has space and comfort. The guide speaks English, Spanish or French and drives the whole route, so there's no separate transportation to arrange.
