  • Return by camel or Jeep to car

I’d always wondered if the Sahara would feel as endless as it looks in photos. Turns out, riding a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga, it’s even quieter than I imagined—just this hush, except for the soft thud of hooves and our guide Hassan humming something under his breath. The air was cool but dry, and I kept catching whiffs of dust and something sweet—maybe almond from the pastries waiting at camp. My legs felt wobbly after thirty minutes on the camel (they really do sway), but watching the sun drop behind those orange dunes made me forget about everything else for a bit.

Hassan knew exactly where to stop for sunset—he even took photos for us (and somehow got my good side). After that we rode on to camp. There were these big smiles from everyone when we arrived, plus mint tea and little almond cookies. I tried saying “shukran” and probably butchered it; they laughed but in a kind way. The tent was bigger than I expected—king bed, real shower with hot water, even soap that smelled faintly of rose. Dinner was served in this cozy spot overlooking the dunes; I’m not sure what all the dishes were called but there was something with lamb that was so tender I still think about it.

Later they lit a bonfire and played Berber drums under more stars than I’ve ever seen—someone handed me a drum but honestly I just clapped along because rhythm is not my thing. Some people tried sandboarding down a nearby dune (I mostly watched and cheered because falling in sand is less graceful than you’d think). It got chilly at night but inside the heated tent I slept so deeply—woke up early to see sunrise paint everything gold before breakfast. Walking back across those dunes in the morning light felt like leaving another world behind… kind of wish I could’ve stayed one more night.
