The Experience

I’d always wondered if the Sahara would feel as endless as it looks in photos. Turns out, riding a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga, it’s even quieter than I imagined—just this hush, except for the soft thud of hooves and our guide Hassan humming something under his breath. The air was cool but dry, and I kept catching whiffs of dust and something sweet—maybe almond from the pastries waiting at camp. My legs felt wobbly after thirty minutes on the camel (they really do sway), but watching the sun drop behind those orange dunes made me forget about everything else for a bit.

Hassan knew exactly where to stop for sunset—he even took photos for us (and somehow got my good side). After that we rode on to camp. There were these big smiles from everyone when we arrived, plus mint tea and little almond cookies. I tried saying “shukran” and probably butchered it; they laughed but in a kind way.
