You leave Agadir at 8am heading south into the Anti Atlas. The drive to Tafraout crosses Ait Baha first, a stretch of landscape built around massive pink granite rocks in bizarre shapes: some hanging from mountainsides, others rising from the valley floor. The road itself becomes part of the journey, winding through this natural gallery for the first hours of the day.

Tafraout is a Berber village 175km into the Ammeln valley, where the inhabitants (chleuh people) grow cereals, almonds, argan and olives on the slopes around town. In spring the almond trees bloom and transform the whole valley. Even outside that season, the rock formations that surround the village dominate the view. After lunch here, the tour continues south toward Tiznit, climbing through Kerdous at 1100m above sea level: another shift in landscape, this one defined by altitude and open views across the mountains.
