The Experience

The van was already humming when I squeezed in, still half-asleep, clutching my coffee. We were heading south from Agadir before the city even warmed up. Our guide—Youssef, grinning like he’d heard every joke before—pointed out the coastline as we rolled past. The first stop was this stretch of Sidi Rabat beach where fishermen actually live in caves. I didn’t expect the smell of salt and fish to hit so strong, or to see old nets drying on rocks. One of the men waved us over; his hands were rough as driftwood. I tried asking about his catch in French but mostly got laughter and a handful of shells pressed into my palm.

After that we drove inland, dust swirling behind us, through villages that looked almost painted onto the hillsides. Lunch was in a Berber home—low table, patterned cushions everywhere. The tajine came out bubbling hot (I burned my tongue because I’m impatient), and there was couscous too, fluffy and sweet with raisins. Mint tea poured high into little glasses; it steamed up my face for a second and made me think of all those times you just have to pause and breathe it in. Youssef told stories about growing up nearby—his mom apparently makes better couscous than anyone else, which he said with this proud shrug.

The Youssef Ben Tachfine dam looked almost out of place after all that desert brush—huge blue water under a sky that felt way too big. We had time to walk along the edge and watch kids skipping stones (they’re better at it than me). Then Tiznit: old pink walls glowing in late sun, gold shops packed tight along narrow streets. Some folks wandered off for souvenirs but I just watched an old man fixing shoes by his doorway; he nodded when I smiled but never stopped working.

I keep thinking about that moment by the beach—the hush between waves and wind, someone’s radio playing far off—and how different life feels just an hour outside Agadir. It’s not polished or perfect but something about it sticks with you longer than you’d guess.
