The experience

The drive from Agadir takes a few hours through the Atlas, with stops built into the route. The first stop is an argan grove where goats climb the trees to eat the fruit: a sight most travelers don't expect to see. A coffee break in a Berber village comes next, then a visit to an argan oil factory to see how the oil is pressed and bottled. By the time you reach Essaouira, you've crossed landscape and learned how the region works before stepping into the city itself.

Once in Essaouira, a local guide takes you through the souk inside the Medina: the maze of stalls and narrow passages that UNESCO recognized as World Heritage in 2001.
