The experience

The day starts at 9am from Agadir with a drive south through orange and lemon plantations. Once you reach Taroudant, nicknamed "Little Marrakech," you walk the medina on foot: a centuries-old maze of souks where vendors sell dried fruits, herbs, handicrafts and antiques. The adobe ramparts that ring the old city date back centuries. A guide leads you through the layout, but the pace is yours to set.

Around midday you leave Taroudant and head 30km downhill to the Tiout oasis, a green palm grove that sits at the foot of the Anti-Atlas with ochre-red Berber houses scattered through it. A 45-minute donkey ride is how locals move through the palmeraie. You'll see the ancestral irrigation system that keeps the oasis alive in the desert. After the ride, you eat lunch at a homestay (chicken with lemon and olives, vegetable and beef couscous, seasonal fruit and mint tea), sitting where you can see both the green palms and the desert beyond.
