The experience

The tour starts with an 8 a.m. pickup from your Fez accommodation. You'll travel south through the Middle Atlas Mountains in a 4x4 vehicle, stopping first in Ifrane (known as Moroccan Switzerland for its clean streets and mountain air), then the Berber village of Azrou, where Barbary Apes roam. After lunch in Midelt, you'll reach the Ziz Valley near Errachidia, where ochre-colored houses line the green palm groves against red earth cliffs. By late afternoon you arrive in Merzouga, where the real experience begins: a camel trek into the sunset across the Erg Chebbi dunes, followed by dinner under the stars at a luxury Berber camp where you sleep in a traditional tent.

Day two starts with a camel ride back to the hotel for breakfast, then a drive toward Ouarzazate via the High Atlas Mountains. You'll visit the historical Sijilmassa Kasbah and the saint Kasbahs of Moulay Ali Cherif, where you can see the daily market and meet Berber families. The afternoon takes you to Dades Gorge, where you stay overnight in a 5-star hotel. On the final day, you drive through the Atlas Mountains toward Marrakech, stopping in Ouarzazate, known as the Hollywood of Africa, to tour film production studios where Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven and The Way Back were shot. You'll also see the Game of Thrones filming location before arriving in Marrakech.
