The Experience

I didn’t expect the air in Ifrane to smell like pine needles—almost alpine, not what I pictured for Morocco. Our driver, Youssef, laughed when I asked if we’d see snow (in June? Not likely). The drive out of Fes started early—my coffee barely kicked in before we were winding through cedar forests and then stopping for lunch in Midelt. The Ziz Valley was all green ribbons between dusty hills; I kept craning my neck out the window just to catch more of it. By the time we reached Merzouga, sand had worked its way into my shoes and hair, but honestly, that first glimpse of the dunes made me forget about everything else.

The real magic started at sunset. Mounting a camel is less graceful than you’d think—I nearly toppled off when mine stood up, which got a big grin from our Berber guide. We rode out just as the sky went from gold to deep blue. There was this hush over the desert, except for the soft thud of hooves and a distant laugh from someone behind me. Dinner that night was tagine cooked slow over coals, eaten cross-legged under stars so bright they almost hurt your eyes. Someone played music by the fire; I tried clapping along but definitely missed the rhythm.

Waking up before dawn for sunrise felt rough at first but worth it—there’s something about seeing light creep over endless sand that makes you feel tiny (in a good way). After breakfast and a quick shower back at the riad, we set off again: Rissani’s market had this sharp scent of spices and leather, and in Todra Gorge I touched cool stone walls while Youssef explained how tribal chiefs still settle disputes here. The road twisted through Dades Valley—roses everywhere in May apparently, though we just caught their scent lingering in the breeze.

By Ouarzazate my head was spinning with place names: Ait Ben Haddou (looked familiar from movies), Tizi N’tichka Pass with switchbacks that made my stomach drop a little. Rolling into Marrakech after all that felt surreal—I kept finding grains of sand in my backpack for days after. Still do sometimes.
