The experience

The journey starts early from Fez and runs south through changing landscapes: the European-style streets of Ifrane, then the Middle Atlas Mountains where the Azrou Cedar Forest shelters native Barbary macaques. A nature walk lets you spot them among the ancient cedars. The route passes through Midelt and its apple orchards before reaching Merzouga at the edge of the Sahara. You'll spend the night in a desert camp after a camel trek to watch the sunset over the dunes.

Day two begins before dawn. You climb a dune in darkness to watch the sunrise from the top, then ride a camel back to Merzouga village for breakfast. The return to Fez includes stops at Tafilalt and Rissani, a town tied to the Alawite dynasty. You arrive back in Fez in the evening, ending a two-day loop that moves from mountain forest to desert and back.

The tour runs as a shared group with a live guide who speaks English, Spanish, Italian or French. Transport is air-conditioned throughout. Dinner and breakfast are included. Lunch is on your own. Hotel pickup from Fez is part of the booking.
