The experience

The tour starts with a pickup in Fes and heads south toward Merzouga. Along the way you'll stop at Ifrane, known for its cool mountain climate, then move into the Middle Atlas where a cedar forest gives you a chance to spot Barbary monkeys. Lunch happens at a roadside restaurant in Midelt before the route drops into the Ziz Valley, an oasis lined with palms where a panoramic viewpoint breaks up the drive. By late afternoon you arrive at the desert edge.

Camels are waiting to carry you out into the dunes. The ride takes you to a camp set up on the sand, where you'll have a private tent for the night. The real draw here is the sunset from a high dune, then dinner at the camp followed by Berber musicians playing around a bonfire. You sleep in the tent and wake to the desert at dawn.

Day two starts with breakfast, then a camel trek back to Merzouga where you can shower at a hotel. From there the route heads west through the Rose Valley, lunch stops in the rose town, and then climbs toward Marrakech. The drive crosses the High Atlas via Tizi n Tichka, a mountain pass at 2,260 meters, passing through Berber villages and Ouarzazate before arriving in Marrakech by evening. The tour ends at Jemaa el-Fna, the city's main square.
