The experience

The tour starts in Fez and heads south through the Tizi-n'Tichka Pass toward the desert. Along the way you stop in Ifrane's national park, pass through the town of Immouzar for views, and reach Midelt for lunch. By afternoon you're in the Ziz Valley, where the landscape opens into a canyon of palms and water before the road climbs toward Erfoud and the dunes. When you arrive at Erg Chebbi, a camel guide meets you at the edge of the sand and leads you on a trek into the dunes to your camp, where dinner and a drum show happen under the open sky before you sleep in a Bedouin-style tent.

Day two starts with breakfast at the camp, then a drive to Rissani to explore Berber villages and the town's famous markets. From there the route turns west into Todra Gorge, a narrow canyon with high red walls and a river running through it. By evening you're at Dades Gorge, where you stay overnight in a hotel and walk the gorge's own dramatic rock formations and valleys.

The final day moves through the Rose Valley and Skoura, where you stop at the Kasbah of Skoura before reaching Ouerzazate. The main event is Kasbah Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO site of earthen buildings clustered on a hillside above a river. You spend about an hour there exploring the medieval layout and mud architecture. From there the drive crosses the Tizi-n'Tichka Pass again and descends into Marrakech, where your driver drops you at your hotel or a location you choose.
