The experience
The tour starts with a 20-minute speedboat ride across Kotor Bay, hugging the coast past centuries-old fishing villages (Muo, Prcanj, Stoliv), and the stone churches and houses that line the water. You'll pass through Perast, a small town known for its narrow streets and mountain views, before arriving at Our Lady of the Rocks. This man-made island holds a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, along with museums and galleries that trace the area's history. You spend 20 minutes here. Note that entry requires covered shoulders and modest-length clothing, so swimwear stays on the boat.
Next, the speedboat takes you to the Lustica Peninsula, where you enter a submarine base built during the world wars for the Yugoslav army. You descend by boat into this hidden fortress, spending 10 minutes inside before heading to Mamula Island. The island, roughly a kilometer across and covered in Mediterranean vegetation, carries centuries of military history (Roman stronghold, Venetian and Austro-Hungarian defense post, World War II prison), and its 19th-century fort dominates the landscape. The views from the water are the draw here, and you'll have time to take them in.
The final stop is the Blue Cave. Starting May 21st, boats can no longer enter, so you'll swim inside from the entrance instead. Sunlight bouncing off the white seabed creates the famous turquoise-blue glow that makes this cave singular. You get 30 minutes to swim, float and absorb it. Snorkelling equipment is provided, and the speedboat waits while you're in the water.
