The experience
Cricova is a working winery built inside a limestone labyrinth that stretches 120 kilometers underground. The tour moves through the cellars where bottles sit at precise angles on stands, rotated daily by hand: a step in the Champenoise process that takes weeks. You'll see the remuage and degorgement stages that turn still wine into sparkling, and walk past the collection's oldest bottle: a single batch of "Easter Jerusalem" produced in 1902, the only one of its kind in the world. The winemaking museum sits inside the complex, and there's an underground church carved into the stone.
After the guided walk through the galleries, you move to a tasting hall where a sommelier pours four wines (still wines and at least one sparkling), and explains what's in the glass. The nuts and biscuits come with the tasting. Private transportation picks you up and brings you back, and the guide speaks your language: English, Italian, Russian or Romanian.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Italian, Russian and Romanian.
What is the Champenoise method and why does Cricova use it?
The Champenoise method is secondary fermentation inside the bottle, followed by aging. Cricova has used it for the last 60 years to produce sparkling wine. The process requires bottles to be rotated daily at a precise angle so sediment settles, then removed in a step called degorgement. Few wineries worldwide still make sparkling wine this way.
How many bottles does Cricova hold and what's the oldest wine there?
Cricova stores 1.3 million bottles across 640 wine types in its underground cellars. The oldest is "Easter Jerusalem," produced in a single batch in 1902 and the only bottle of its kind in the world.
What do I taste during the wine tasting?
You taste four types of wine, including a sparkling wine. A sommelier guides the tasting and explains the production story behind each glass.
What's included with the tour besides the wine tasting?
The tour includes private transportation, bottled water, nuts and biscuits, and the guided walk through the cellars and production areas.
