The experience
Six hours in the jungle means time for both the ziplines and the water. You zipline through the canopy where spider monkeys live: jaguars, pumas, howler monkeys and dozens of bird species also move through this part of the Yucatán. Between the ziplines you canoe across the lagoons that give Punta Laguna its name, and the reserve's guides point out the animals as they appear. Lunch is provided partway through.
The reserve operates as a sustainable ecotourism project, so the money spent here goes directly to local Mayan communities. You'll need at least a moderate level of physical fitness for the ziplines and the jungle trekking. The operator provides all rappel equipment and snorkelling gear. An air-conditioned vehicle picks you up in Tulum and drives the 60 km inland to the reserve, then returns you at the end of the day.
A live guide leads the group in English or Spanish, so you can choose the language that works for you. The reserve is authentic and wild, not a manicured park, so the wildlife sightings depend on the time of day and the season, but spider monkeys are the main draw and the reason the reserve exists.
