Climb a pyramid, then fly above water and drop into a cenote

An eight-hour day trip from Tulum combines Mayan archaeology and adventure at two sites. Start at Coba Ruins, where you ride a bicycle to the region's tallest pyramid, climb it, and watch a purification ceremony at Punta Laguna. Then kayak across the lagoon, zipline above the water, rappel into a sacred cenote for a swim, and finish with lunch cooked by a Mayan family.

The experience

The day starts with a 40-minute drive from your Tulum hotel to Coba, a Mayan city built around the largest pyramid in the region, and the only one visitors can still climb. A local guide walks you through the ruins and explains what the city meant in Mayan times. You'll ride a bicycle (or a tricycle with a driver if you prefer) to reach the base of the pyramid, then climb to the top and stand where Mayan priests once stood. After 25 minutes back in the van, you arrive at Punta Laguna, a Mayan village where you'll watch a real priest perform a purification ceremony.

From there, the adventure shifts to the water. You walk through the reserve until you reach the lagoon, then paddle a kayak across to the far side where the zipline starts. You fly above the water on the line, then rappel down into a sacred cenote below. The cenote is deep enough to swim in, so you'll have time to cool off before heading back. On the return drive to Tulum, you can stop to buy Mayan crafts and souvenirs.

Lunch and all drinks are included and cooked by a Mayan family as part of the day. The tour runs eight hours total and suits anyone with moderate fitness. Children must be with an adult. A guide who speaks English, Spanish, Italian or Swedish leads the group, and hotel pickup is included.
