The Experience

I’ll be honest — I was nervous about the first zipline at Selva Maya Eco Adventure Park near Tulum. My palms were sweaty (classic), but our guide Marco just grinned and told me to look out for spider monkeys in the branches. The air felt heavy and green — you know that thick jungle smell? It’s real here. Once we launched off the first platform, though, I forgot about everything except the wind and those wild flashes of sunlight between leaves. There are nine ziplines total, but I lost count after the third because I was too busy yelling and laughing with this couple from Puebla who kept racing each other.

The hanging bridges looked easy until I realized they wobbled like crazy — my legs were jelly by bridge number two. Marco showed us how to balance (“like you’re walking on eggs,” he said), but I still nearly dropped my water bottle into the undergrowth. After that came rock climbing up this pyramid wall (harder than it looks) and then rappelling down right over a cenote. That part got my heart pounding for sure; you can hear your own breathing echo off the limestone before you finally touch down next to the water.

Swimming in that semi-open cenote was honestly a relief after all the adrenaline. The water’s colder than you’d think — like a shock that wakes you up in the best way. Some folks cliff-jumped; I just floated for a while watching dust motes drift in shafts of light through the opening above. We finished with tacos (pulled pork or chicken, with spicy salsa that Marco warned me about — he wasn’t kidding) and cold beer at these wooden tables under palm trees. I still think about how quiet it got when everyone was eating, just listening to birds and our own tired laughter.
