Earn your PADI certification and dive Mexico's cenotes and reefs

The Open Water Diver course is a three-day PADI certification program in Mexico combining classroom theory, pool training, and four open water dives in the sea or cenotes. You receive a digital manual in advance, hotel pickup and drop-off, all equipment, a professional multilingual instructor, and an underwater video of your dives. Upon completion, you hold a worldwide certification valid to 18 meters depth.

The Experience

You arrive in Mexico with a few days free and no diving experience—or maybe you've snorkeled and want to go deeper. This course starts with theory you can study online before your holiday, so the classroom time moves fast. Your instructor, certified and fluent in English, Spanish, French or Russian, teaches the principles of scuba in person, then walks you through the skills you'll need: how to breathe underwater, how to equalize pressure, how to handle your gear. The health questionnaire screens for conditions that would make diving unsafe; if you're clear, you're ready to move to the water.

The first dives happen in a pool or confined shallow water, where you practice the basics without the variables of the open ocean. Once you're comfortable with your equipment and the fundamentals, you move to four open water dives in Mexico's actual diving sites—the sea, or the cenotes unique to this region. Mexico holds millions of species and geological formations most divers never see; the advantage of certifying here is that your training dives take you into that world instead of a generic quarry. Your instructor stays with you through all four dives, and a camera captures the underwater footage so you have a record of the moment you became a certified diver.

By the end of day three, you pass the final exam and officially hold your PADI Open Water Diver card. That certificate is recognized worldwide and lets you dive independently to 18 meters. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, so you don't arrange transport; all equipment is provided, and bottled water keeps you hydrated between dives. The whole course—theory, confined water work, four open dives, certification, video, and logistics—fits into three days.

Top questions

What do I actually do during the four open water dives?

The four open water dives let you practice the skills you learned in the pool—equalizing pressure, managing your air, controlling buoyancy—in real diving conditions. Your instructor stays with you the entire time, and you dive to depths that build your confidence and competence. The dives happen in Mexico's cenotes or sea sites, so you're not just practicing; you're exploring an actual diving environment.

Can I do this course if I've never dived before?

Yes. The Open Water Diver course is the entry-level PADI certification and assumes no prior diving experience. You start with theory and pool training before any open water work, so you build skills progressively. The minimum age is 10 years old, and the course is suitable for all physical fitness levels, though you'll complete a health questionnaire to screen for conditions that would make diving unsafe.

When do I get the underwater video?

The instructor films your dives during the open water portion of the course, and you receive the video as part of the package. It's a record of your certification dives and the marine life and formations you encounter in Mexico.

How does the digital manual work before I arrive?

The operator sends you the PADI course manual in digital form before your holiday so you can study the theory at your own pace. This means classroom time focuses on questions and hands-on instruction rather than lecturing the basics, and you move faster through the certification.

What's included in the price, and what do I need to bring?

The course includes all diving equipment, the digital manual, pool and open water training, the PADI certification, hotel pickup and drop-off, bottled water, and the underwater video. You don't need to bring or rent gear. Diving insurance is available as an optional add-on at checkout.

Are there any reasons I shouldn't take this course?

The course is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy. Some pre-existing medical conditions—such as asthma or heart conditions—may prevent you from diving safely. You'll complete a health questionnaire before the course, and if you have any concerns, consult your doctor beforehand. Diving within 24 hours of flying is also not recommended.
