Your first breath underwater happens on a real reef, not in a classroom.

A PADI Discover Scuba Diving program in Playa del Carmen teaches you to dive in one session: brief theory and pool training on land, then a guided boat dive on the Riviera Maya reefs with full gear and an instructor. Pickup is included; the dive takes 4 hours total. Marine park fees (USD 8 per diver per day) are separate. You must complete a health questionnaire before the dive, and a few medical conditions prevent participation — check the operator's medical policy if you have heart, lung or pregnancy concerns.

The Experience

The session starts with theory and a pool session to get you comfortable with the equipment and basic skills. Once you're ready, you board a boat and head out to the reefs. The instructor stays with you the entire dive, showing you how to move underwater and pointing out what's around you. You're not watching from the surface or sitting in a classroom — you're breathing underwater, moving through the reef, and learning by doing.

The full program runs 4 hours, which means it fits into a morning or an afternoon without eating your whole day. Pickup is included, so you don't arrange transport to the dive shop. The gear — wetsuit, tank, regulator, all of it — comes with the program. You bring a swimsuit and a towel. The reefs of the Riviera Maya are shallow enough for beginners and full of fish and coral, so the dive itself is the classroom.

One thing to know: you can't fly or go to altitude for 24 hours after diving, so plan accordingly if you're island-hopping. The operator requires a health questionnaire, and some conditions — asthma, heart issues, pregnancy — may disqualify you. It's worth checking their medical policy before you book if you have any concerns. The minimum age is 10, and kids that age need a parent present.

What do I actually do during the dive itself?

You descend with your instructor on the reef, practice breathing and basic movements underwater, and then explore the reef at a shallow depth while the instructor watches and points out marine life. You're not tethered or in a confined space — you're moving freely underwater with your guide right there.

Do I need diving experience or certification to book this?

No. The Discover Scuba program is designed for first-timers. You get theory and pool training before the boat dive, so the instructor knows you're ready before you go underwater on the reef.

What's included in the 4 hours?

The 4 hours covers the theory session, pool work, the boat ride out, and the guided reef dive itself. Pickup from your hotel is included; lunch and drinks are not.

Are there extra costs beyond the booking price?

Marine park fees are USD 8 per diver per day, charged separately. Video footage of your dive is available to purchase if you want a record of it.

What happens if I have a medical condition?
