The experience
The day splits into two halves: classroom and pool work first, then the reef dive. You'll start with theory (the safety guidelines and how the equipment works), then move to the pool to practice the key skills you'll need underwater: how to breathe through the regulator, how to clear water from your mask, how to control your buoyancy. A PADI instructor walks you through each one. Once you're comfortable, you board the boat and head out to a local reef in front of Playa del Carmen for your first open water dive. You're not alone down there. Your instructor stays with you the whole time, making sure you're steady and answering questions as they come up.
Full scuba equipment is provided (tank, wetsuit, weights, the works), so you show up with nothing but a swimsuit and a willingness to try. The whole experience takes four hours. It's designed for people who've always wondered what diving feels like but aren't ready to commit to a certification course that takes several days. You get the real thing: actual breathing underwater, actual reef, actual depth. Some people book this and decide diving isn't for them. Most get hooked and sign up for certification the next time they're in town.
