The Experience

Uxmal is a UNESCO-listed site that sits about two hours from Cancun, and the day starts with hotel pickup and the drive inland. Once you arrive at the archaeological site, you spend time exploring the ruins with your guide, who walks you through the layout and the history. The main draw is climbing to the top of the Mayan Pyramid itself — the view from up there frames the whole complex — and visiting the temple of the turtle, where female religious leaders lived. Your guide explains what you're standing in front of as you move through the site, and the itinerary is flexible, so you can linger where it interests you most.

After Uxmal, the tour heads to Merida, the capital of the Yucatan peninsula. The city was built by Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century, and the colonial architecture clusters around a central plaza with colorful buildings and a historic church. You walk the main street and the square, getting a sense of the town on foot. Then comes the cacao museum, where you learn how the ancient Maya people used cacao beans and watch the preparation of cacao into natural chocolate — this is where the "bean to chocolate bar" part of the day happens. Before heading back to Cancun, there's a final stop at a traditional Yucatan hacienda, the former estate of conquistadors and their slaves, which rounds out the picture of the region's colonial past.
