The experience

The day starts with Tulum, the walled city built on a cliff above the Caribbean. A certified guide explains why this ancient port stood beside the sea and walks you through the layout of the city: the temples, the palaces, the walls that once protected the trade routes. You'll have time to photograph the ruins against the water and move through the site at a pace that lets the scale of the place sink in.

From there you head inland to Coba, a city where trade was the principal activity and where the pyramids still rise above the jungle canopy. You'll spend around 1.5 hours exploring the buildings and structures, then sit down for a regional buffet lunch at a restaurant near the archaeological site. The meal gives you an hour to rest before the cenote.

The cenote (which the Maya believed was an entrance to another world) is where you swim. The operator chooses the cenote based on availability each day, which keeps you away from the crowded spots. You can swim or jump in, surrounded by the limestone walls and the stillness of the place. Lunch is served here as well, so you eat after the water or before, depending on the day's flow.

The tour ends on Fifth Avenue in Playa del Carmen, the main shopping street of the Mexican Caribbean. You walk through hundreds of stores and stalls selling souvenirs, crafts, and goods.
