The Experience

We were already bouncing over the Sea of Cortez before I realized how far we’d come from Loreto — just a quick ride from the marina but it felt like another world. The guide, Jorge, pointed out a cluster of dolphins weaving through the wake (I almost dropped my phone trying to film them). There was this salty wind in my face and the sun was sharp but not too hot. Someone handed me a cold soda — honestly, it hit the spot right then.

I didn’t expect Coronado Island to smell so fresh. The volcanic rocks had this warm mineral scent, and when we got close to the sea lion colony, you could hear their barking echo off the cliffs — kind of funny and loud. Jorge tossed out some facts about the island’s history (I only caught half because I was watching pelicans dive-bombing for fish). We slid into the water with our snorkels; it’s true what they say about this place being an aquarium. Bright fish everywhere. I lost track of time floating there, just listening to my own breathing and the distant splash of someone laughing.

Lunch was simple — sandwiches and fruit under an umbrella on the beach — but after swimming, it tasted amazing. The sand was fine and almost white, not sticky at all. A little girl from another group kept bringing shells over to show us; her dad tried to explain their names in Spanish but I definitely mangled my reply (he laughed though). The whole thing felt relaxed and unhurried. If you want wild nightlife or crowds, this isn’t it… but if you want to just sit with your feet in warm water looking at blue that goes on forever? Yeah.
