Sea lions and dolphins share the boat ride. The snorkeling happens in water Jacques Cousteau called the aquarium of the world.

A half-day boat tour from Loreto to Coronado Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Sea of Cortez, combines a 30-minute cruise with snorkeling, wildlife viewing and a beach picnic lunch. The tour includes all snorkeling equipment, park entry, a certified guide in English or Spanish, and four hours total. Guests must be able to board the boat independently and are welcome to bring their own alcohol (no glass bottles). Wildlife sightings (sea lions, dolphins, birds) vary and are not guaranteed, as these are wild animals in their natural habitat.

Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Coronado Island and Sea of Cortez

  • Boat ride from Loreto to Coronado Island
  • Observe sea lions and island rock formations
  • Swim and snorkel in crystal-clear waters
  • Lunch on a pristine beach
  • Relax on the beach or swim
  • Boat ride back to Loreto

The experience

The boat leaves Loreto for a half-hour panoramic ride across the Sea of Cortez, passing Coronado's distinctive rock formations on the approach. Once there, you cruise around the island to watch sea lions in their natural colony and spot dolphins and bird colonies if they're active that day. The water is clear enough to see what lives below, and that's where the snorkeling begins: you slip in with provided gear and spend time exploring the marine life Cousteau named the aquarium of the world.

After snorkeling, the boat pulls into one of Coronado's white-sand beaches for lunch (fish ceviche, burritos, fresh fruit, granola bars and chips), served while you sit in a beach chair facing the turquoise water. You can swim again, walk the beach or simply rest there before the return ride to Loreto, taking in the coastline one more time from the boat. The whole outing runs four hours from start to finish.

Snorkeling equipment, the park entrance fee and permit, soft drinks, beach chairs and a certified guide are all included. Bring a towel, hat, sunglasses and biodegradable sunscreen, and a jacket if you're visiting in winter. The tour runs rain or shine. Children must wear a life jacket on the boat and in the water. If you're arriving by cruise ship, provide your ship's name and docking time at booking so the operator can time your return to the port.
