The Experience

You arrive at the dive shop and meet your instructor, who runs through the theory before you step into the water. The practical class happens in the shallows or the pool—whichever suits the day—where you practice the basics until you're confident with your gear: the BCD vest, regulator, fins and diving suit all provided. The instructor watches close and gives hands-on guidance. Once everyone is ready, you board the boat and head out to the reef.

The dive itself is a single tank to a maximum of 40 feet, with your instructor alongside. The captain positions the boat at one of the best spots on Cozumel's barrier reef, and you descend into the water that stays warm and clear year-round. This is where the training becomes real—you're underwater, breathing through the regulator, moving through the reef with your guide. The dive lasts as long as the tank allows, and when you surface, the boat is waiting to bring you back to shore.

The whole experience runs about four and a half hours from arrival to the end. You'll need to show up 30 minutes early for registration, bring a swimsuit and comfortable clothes, and be ready to move in and out of the water a few times. The group stays small, which means the instructor can watch everyone and adjust the pace. If you've never dived before, this is how most people start; if you've dived elsewhere, the Cozumel reefs are the reason to come back.
