The experience

You arrive at Chankanaab Park with your entrance ticket already sorted. After a 20-minute briefing on the surface, you gear up with a certified instructor (PADI or SSI trained), and enter the water in the park's protected area. The descent is gradual: you start in shallow water where your feet touch bottom, so there's no sensation of falling or losing control. Your instructor stays with you the entire time, watching your breathing and hand signals.

The dive lasts roughly an hour. You move through coral formations and past schools of colorful fish, then toward the statues (a Christ figure and a virgin) that sit on the seafloor. The cave system comes next: it's shallow enough that you can still stand, but the rock formations create a roof overhead and the water inside has a thermocline, a visible layer where temperature shifts. The light phenomenon the park is known for happens here. Your instructor controls the pace and points out details. You're not navigating or making decisions about depth or direction.

After you surface and remove your gear, the day doesn't end. You can keep the snorkeling equipment and explore the park's other attractions (more reef, the lagoon, the beach areas) at your own pace. Lockers hold your belongings while you're in the water, and umbrellas and bedspreads are available if you want to rest between activities.

Is Chankanaab Park easy to reach from where I'm staying?

Chankanaab Park is on the west coast of Cozumel, about 9 kilometers south of San Miguel de Cozumel (the main town). If you don't have a rental car, a taxi from your hotel or the ferry pier costs around 200–300 pesos each way. The park is a popular stop, so drivers know it well.

What can I do after the dive?

After you finish diving and snorkeling, Chankanaab Park has a beach, a lagoon, walking trails and other reef areas to explore. Your park ticket covers the whole day, so you can stay as long as you want.
