A beginner scuba lesson at Chankanaab Park in Cozumel where you take a 20-minute class on the surface, then dive for about an hour with a certified PADI or SSI instructor to a maximum depth of 8 meters. You start in shallow water where you can stand, use full scuba equipment, and see coral formations, fish, underwater statues and a cave system with its own light phenomenon. Park entrance, all diving gear, snorkeling equipment and lockers are included; children from age 9 are welcome.

The Experience

You arrive at Chankanaab Park with your entrance ticket already sorted. After a 20-minute briefing on the surface, you gear up with a certified instructor—PADI or SSI trained—and enter the water in the park's protected area. The descent is gradual: you start in shallow water where your feet touch bottom, so there's no sensation of falling or losing control. Your instructor stays with you the entire time, watching your breathing and hand signals.

The dive lasts roughly an hour. You move through coral formations and past schools of colorful fish, then toward the statues—a Christ figure and a virgin—that sit on the seafloor. The cave system comes next: it's shallow enough that you can still stand, but the rock formations create a roof overhead and the water inside has a thermocline, a visible layer where temperature shifts. The light phenomenon the park is known for happens here. Your instructor controls the pace and points out details; you're not navigating or making decisions about depth or direction.

After you surface and remove your gear, the day doesn't end. You can keep the snorkeling equipment and explore the park's other attractions—more reef, the lagoon, the beach areas—at your own pace. Lockers hold your belongings while you're in the water, and umbrellas and bedspreads are available if you want to rest between activities.
