The Experience

I barely had time to finish my coffee before we were piling into the van—still half-awake, honestly. The marina felt busy but easygoing, a few sleepy faces like mine and the salty air already sticking to my skin. There was this quiet moment when everyone just stopped talking and watched the horizon. Then someone spotted the first whale shark fin and suddenly we were scrambling for masks and fins. The main thing they kept repeating: go slow, don’t crowd them. Two guests per guide in the water at a time. It felt respectful, almost like sneaking into someone else’s living room. The whale sharks moved so gently it made me forget how big they are until one glided past—close enough that I could see its spots shifting under the sun. My heart was pounding but everything else went kind of quiet.

Afterwards we peeled off wetsuits with shaky hands (mine anyway), laughing about who swallowed the most seawater. They passed around sandwiches and fruit while we motored back toward Isla Mujeres—someone opened a bottle of sparkling wine for “cheers” that tasted way better than I expected after all that salt. Playa Norte looked impossibly blue when we arrived. Some folks just lay in the sand; I floated for ages, letting my legs go numb because why not? Sofia told us about her favorite taco stand on the island but honestly I was too full from ceviche to move much.
