The experience

You meet at the beach in Akumal, where a host greets you and walks you to the water's edge. A local guide (someone who has spent their life in these waters) fits you with snorkeling gear and a life jacket, then runs through the basics: how to breathe, where you're going, what to expect. The guide knows the bay's authorized snorkeling zones and the turtles' habits, which is what makes the difference between a generic reef swim and actually finding them.

Once in the water, you follow the guide through the bay. Sea turtles move through these shallows year-round, and you'll see them grazing on seagrass or cruising past coral heads. The guide stays close, pointing out tropical fish, the reef structure, and other marine life around you. A photographer captures stills and video throughout, so you leave with a record of the moment instead of just your memory of it. The whole snorkel lasts roughly an hour before you head back to shore.

The tour is built around small groups, which means the guide can watch everyone and adjust the pace if someone needs it.
