Akumal Beach Swim and Snorkel with Turtles: Half-Day Tour
Akumal Beach lets you snorkel alongside turtles in shallow water with a local guide, then settle into the sand for the afternoon.
A half-day snorkel tour at Akumal Beach near Playa del Carmen pairs a guided swim with sea turtles in their natural habitat alongside two hours of unstructured beach time. Hotel or meeting point pickup is included; snorkeling gear, water and snacks are provided. A live guide leads in English or Spanish, and children from age 4 are welcome. The turtle protection program costs 15 USD per person, paid on the day of travel.
The Experience
The tour starts with hotel pickup or a meeting point in Playa del Carmen or Tulum, then heads to Akumal Beach in an air-conditioned vehicle. Once there, you'll put on snorkeling gear and enter the water with an expert local guide who knows where the turtles gather and how to move around them without disruption. The water is shallow and calm, and the turtles are accustomed to respectful swimmers, so you're watching them feed and move through their space rather than chasing them down.
After the guided snorkel, the group returns to the beach for snacks and bottled water. From there, the day becomes yours: two hours to float in the shallows, dry off under a palm tree, walk the sand, or simply sit with the view. This stretch is the part many people remember most—no schedule, no group activity, just Akumal on a weekday afternoon.
Bring a towel, swimsuit, flip-flops and a change of clothes; sunscreen is not permitted during the water time with turtles, so plan accordingly. The turtle protection program is optional but recommended at 15 USD per person, collected on the day you travel. The whole outing runs about four hours from pickup to drop-off.
