Marine biologists lead the experience to prioritize wildlife safety.

Step-by-step itinerary

Snorkel with turtles at reef

  • Start from paradise beach
  • Boat to reef
  • Snorkel with turtles

The Experience

The boat leaves from a beach near Tulum and heads straight to the reef where sea turtles are guaranteed to appear. You'll snorkel in front of the Mayan castle with full equipment provided—mask, fins, wetsuit—and a certified guide in the water with you. The respect for wildlife is built into every stop: your guide is a marine biologist or certified dive instructor trained to keep the animals undisturbed and the snorkelers safe.

After the reef, the boat takes you to three cenotes—underground freshwater pools unique to this region. Two of them are for snorkeling; you'll descend into the cavern and drift through water surrounded by limestone walls and the sound of dripping. The third cenote is a walking tour through the underground world, no snorkeling required. Between stops, the boat has a shaded area and the air-conditioned vehicle waiting onshore means you're never sitting in the heat.

Snacks are provided throughout the half-day. Guides speak English, Spanish, Italian, French and several other languages, so communication is straightforward. Pickup is included from your hotel in Playa del Carmen, Cancun or Tulum—you choose the location at checkout. Children from age one are welcome, though the activity is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy or significant cardiovascular concerns.

Top questions

Will I actually see sea turtles when I snorkel near Tulum?

Yes—the operator guarantees turtle sightings at the reef in front of Tulum's Mayan castle. The snorkeling happens in their natural habitat, and your certified guide knows where they congregate and how to observe them without disturbing them.

What exactly happens at each of the three cenotes?

Two cenotes are for snorkeling: you'll enter the underground chamber and swim through the freshwater pool surrounded by limestone. The third cenote is a walking tour through the underground world, so you explore it on foot instead of in the water.

Is all the snorkeling gear included, or do I need to bring my own?

All snorkeling equipment is provided—mask, fins and wetsuit. You don't need to bring or rent anything; the boat carries everything and your guide will fit you properly before you enter the water.

Which pickup location should I choose if I'm staying in Playa del Carmen?

Pick up from Playa del Carmen if your hotel is there. If you're in Cancun or Tulum, choose the pickup closest to your accommodation; the operator will confirm the exact pickup time and location after you book.

How long does the whole experience take?

The half-day trip runs four to five hours from pickup to drop-off, including the reef snorkeling, all three cenotes and snacks on the boat.
