The Experience

“Try to relax your shoulders,” our instructor Marco said, grinning like he’d seen this nervous wobble a hundred times. I was standing knee-deep in the warm Cancun water, helmet slightly crooked, heart thumping. There was this faint smell of sunscreen and salt in the air—plus that weird mechanical hum from the jetpack itself. Marco adjusted the straps one more time and told me not to overthink it. “You’ll feel it before you understand it,” he promised. He was right, actually.

The first few seconds were chaos—legs flailing, water splashing everywhere, my brain yelling what are you doing?! But then suddenly I was up, hovering above the turquoise surface.
