The Experience

I’ll admit, I was a little nervous climbing into the small zodiac boat that morning in Cabo San Lucas. The water looked calm but you could feel this low, salty breeze, and everyone had that jittery excitement—like we were all quietly hoping for something wild to happen. Our guide, Miguel, handed out juice boxes (which made me laugh) and told us about the humpback whales migrating here every winter. He said their songs can travel for miles underwater. I didn’t really get it until later.

The boat skimmed over the surface instead of chopping through it—Miguel explained it’s better for the whales that way. We spotted our first spout maybe twenty minutes out. It was weirdly quiet except for the gulls and then suddenly—there it was—a huge tail slap right near us. I fumbled my phone but honestly didn’t need it; they take all the photos for you anyway (and they’re actually good). At one point Miguel dropped a hydrophone into the water and let us listen—those deep, echoing whale songs felt almost unreal. Like standing inside a cathedral made of water.

There were only a handful of us on board so nobody had to jostle for space or shout over each other. Someone asked if we ever disturb the whales doing this and Miguel shook his head—he said local rules are strict here, and you could see he meant it. The sun kept shifting on the waves, making everything look silver-blue. I still think about how small we felt next to those whales—and how weirdly peaceful it was just floating there after all the splashing stopped.
