The experience
The day starts at 5:30 am in Cabo San Lucas with a 2.5-hour drive to La Ventana in an air-conditioned van, where you'll get a breakfast pack (burritos, fruit, cereal bar and juice) or stop for takeout along the way. You board the panga directly from the beach in ankle-deep water, bring flipflops for easy wading, and head out for 5 to 6 hours of wildlife searching. April through June is mobula ray season: if the conditions align, you'll see them in fevers of hundreds or thousands, launching themselves high out of the water in acrobatic displays. You'll jump in and swim among them, sometimes close enough for photos.
The boat carries snorkeling equipment, life jackets, shade and seating, and an expert local captain. Beyond the mobula rays, the day can bring orcas, sperm whales, blue whales, whale sharks or wild dolphins, though no specific wildlife is guaranteed. Before heading back to shore, you'll picnic on the boat with fish or vegan ceviche (dietary requirements are accommodated), and snorkel a shallow reef where sea lions gather. Arrival back in Cabo is around 4 pm. The activity suits kids from age 5 and anyone comfortable in snorkeling gear and willing to get wet. Basic mobility to board and climb a simple ladder is required, and there's no bathroom onboard.

What are mobula rays and why do they gather near La Ventana?
Mobula rays are large, graceful rays that travel in massive aggregations (sometimes hundreds or thousands together) down the Pacific coast of Baja Sur during April through June. La Ventana is the peak hotspot for this seasonal gathering, and the rays are known for launching themselves high out of the water in acrobatic leaps, which is why the activity centers on swimming alongside them during this window.
How long is the boat ride and what happens if we don't see mobula rays?
The boat search lasts 5 to 6 hours, and you'll spend that time looking for whatever wildlife is present that day. While mobula rays are the draw during April-June, no specific animal is guaranteed. The day can also bring orcas, whales, dolphins or whale sharks. Even without the rays, you'll snorkel a reef near a sea lion colony, which is a full experience on its own.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer or have snorkeling experience?
You need to be comfortable in snorkeling gear and willing to get wet, with at least a moderate level of physical fitness. The activity suits kids from age 5 and up. Basic mobility to board the boat and climb a simple ladder is required. There's no bathroom onboard, so plan accordingly. The guides are rescue-diver qualified as a minimum.
What's included in the meals and snorkel gear?
Breakfast is either a pack (burritos, fruit, cereal bar and juice) provided in the van or a quick takeout stop along the 2.5-hour drive. Lunch is a picnic on the boat with fish or vegan ceviche, and all dietary requirements are accommodated. Snorkeling equipment is provided, along with an air-conditioned vehicle for transport and basic photos and videos from the day.
