The Experience

The Citadel Fort sits 100 metres above Port Louis on Petite Montague hill, and from there you see the harbour, the local racecourse and the entire city laid out below. Before you reach it, the tour moves through the markets—the Caudan waterfront mall and the local craft market where artisans sell handmade products, spices and vanilla—so you get a sense of how Port Louis moves before you climb to the overlook. The SSR Botanical Garden, also called the Pamplemousses Garden, covers 37 hectares and is the oldest in the Southern Hemisphere; the giant water lilies (Victoria amazonica) are the draw, but the garden also holds sugar canes, ebonies, spices and palms from Central America, Asia, Africa and the Indian Ocean islands. Trees there were planted by Princess Margaret, Indira Gandhi, François Mitterrand and Robert Mugabe.

The rum distillery at Chateau de Labourdonais is a colonial house where you see how rum is made from sugar, and then the tour moves north to the beaches. Grand Baie is the most touristic stretch on the island—crowded, developed, the place to photograph—while Pereybere is quieter and described as very beautiful. The day ends at the red-roofed church at Cap Malheureux, one of the oldest and best-maintained churches in Mauritius, where the light is good for photographs and the stop is brief enough that the whole route stays inside six to eight hours.
