The experience
You start with pickup from your hotel and head into the south with a guide who speaks English, Italian or French. The route passes through Floreal, a busy village of diamond shops and factories, then moves into the scenic stretches that make this region distinct: a freshwater reservoir in the middle of farmland, a long drive through landscape that locals favor, and the sacred lake where Hindu temples and a large Shiva statue sit on the water. The guide handles the commentary on Mauritian culture and what you're seeing. You sit back in air conditioning and watch the terrain change.
Three viewpoints break up the drive. One has its own trail park and opens onto the whole south: rivers, forest, the shape of the land. Another frames the Black River Gorges and lets you see northwest Mauritius from a single vantage. A third replaced a closed road section (Gorges 52 was shut by the government in February 2024, but the operator rerouted the tour and added two replacement viewpoints). The stops are built around what's visible, not a fixed schedule, so timing shifts with light and how long you linger.
Trou aux Cerfs, the dormant volcano that shaped the island, sits at the end of the route. You can see wild monkeys in the south here. Ebony forest is offered as an optional add but isn't forced into the itinerary. You decide at the start whether it fits your day. Lunch happens at a restaurant you choose from options the guide suggests. It's not included in the price. The whole tour runs 5 to 7 hours depending on stops and pace.
