The experience
Your day starts with pickup from your hotel anywhere in Mauritius and a drive to Trou aux Cerfs, a dormant volcanic crater 605 meters above sea level with a diameter of 350 meters. The crater sits inside a forest of indigenous plants and giant green pines, and from the rim you get a 360-degree view of Curepipe, the Rempart Mountain, and the Port-Louis–Moka range. From there you move to Mare aux Vacoas, the island's largest reservoir at nearly 26 million cubic meters, ringed by thick forest and offering a quiet break from the usual pace.
Next comes Grand Bassin, a crater lake at 550 meters elevation where a 33-meter statue of Lord Shiva stands on the shoreline beside temples and shrines. The lake itself is about 18 meters deep and draws Hindu pilgrims and visitors who come to walk the shore and meditate. After that, Alexandra Falls drops from a wooden platform viewpoint 700 meters above sea level, with a panoramic view of the southeast coast and turquoise ocean beyond. The Gorges Viewpoint follows, opening onto the Black River Gorges National Park: 17,000 acres of rainforest with rolling hills, deep valleys, and waterfalls that protect most of the island's remaining native vegetation and wildlife.
Lunch is a three-course Mauritian meal at a local restaurant in Chamarel village: fresh salads, rice, soup, and your choice of chicken curry, fish, or vegetables, with the chef explaining each option. After eating, you stop at Chamarel Viewpoint for views of the southwest coast, green mountains, Le Morne Brabant, and the turquoise lagoon. The final stretch is Casela Nature Park, where you ride the Tulawaka Gold Coaster (a 760-meter alpine luge with cable lift, steep descents and bends, and views of the west coast), then take an African Truck Safari to see zebras, ostriches, white rhinos, impalas, and wildebeest. The park also includes a bird aviary walk and a 4D cinema experience before your return to the hotel.
