The experience
Eight to nine hours takes you through more than eight stops across the south-west, starting with Chamarel Waterfall: a private location set inside the exotic Chamarel park that draws nature lovers for its scale and setting. From there, the jeep safari heads into Ebony Forest high in the Chamarel peaks, where an experienced guide walks you through native plants and birds while explaining the Mauritian black ebony that grows nowhere else. The forest section runs two to three hours depending on weather and how long you spend in the on-site museum and cinema.
The route then moves through the Black River Gorges National Park viewpoint, one of the island's highest vantage points for seeing the hidden valley below, and Trou aux Cerfs, a dormant volcano at the center of Mauritius believed to have formed the island itself. You'll visit Ganga Talao, the sacred lake and temples considered holy ground for Hindu Mauritians, then reach Seven Coloured Earth Geopark (the most visited site in the tour), where giant tortoises roam the grounds and the layered earth formations shift between rust, purple, red and other shades as light moves across them. The return route includes Alexandra Falls viewpoint and a scenic drive past the island's famous reservoir.
Lunch is a 3-course meal with soft drinks, vegetarian and vegan options available, and halal certified. Your certified driver handles all pickup and drop-off. The vehicle is air-conditioned and private except for the shared jeep portion of the Ebony Forest safari, which runs through the Ebony Conservatory.
