The Experience

You board your private speedboat and head straight to Blue Bay Marine Park, where the water sits at an average depth of 5.5 meters with visibility clear enough to pick out individual fish. The reef holds more than 50 species of coral—Damselfish, Surgeonfish, Butterfly fish, juvenile Sailfin tangs, tiny Pipefish and large Trumpet fish move through them. You snorkel here at your own pace, then the boat moves on.

The route takes you past the Dalblair shipwreck, which has sat on the coral reef at Pointe d'Esny since 1902 with a history the guide walks you through. Next is Île aux Aigrettes, where you swim in a natural lagoon full of starfish and drink a cocktail on the sand. Île aux Phare comes after—a small rocky island with an 1864 lighthouse ruin still standing, built to guide ships into Mahebourg port. Île de la Passe, off the southeast coast, holds the remains of French and British colonial defenses from two and a half centuries ago; the ruins sit on a site commemorated on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. You pass Îlot Vacoas on the way, then spend about 30 minutes on Île aux Flamands, a white-sand island in the middle of the lagoon where you snorkel again in turquoise water.

The boat sails along the Grand River South-East Waterfalls canal, where wild flora lines the banks and Mauritian fruit bats rest in the highest trees. Monkeys jump through the branches beside the water if you're there at the right moment. Then you reach Île aux Cerfs, the main stop, where palm trees frame white beaches and turquoise water. You have free time to swim, walk, snorkel or relax. Around noon, a BBQ lunch arrives—chicken and fish with sides and salads, vegetarian options on request—and an open bar runs through the afternoon with unlimited drinks, live sega dance and entertainment.
