The experience

You depart from your Kuala Lumpur hotel in the afternoon for a 1.5-hour drive north through countryside and palm oil plantations to Sekinchan, a rice-farming district about 102 km away. The town sits in Selangor's main rice-bowl area and produces the highest yield per acre in Malaysia across roughly 4,300 acres of paddy and fruit land. Depending on the season, the fields shift from green shoots to golden harvest, and a stop at the local museum explains the region's agricultural history. A visit to Nan Tian Temple, built in 1984 on a rise overlooking the paddies, offers a second-floor vantage point across the fields. The temple is the landmark of Site A and hosts the region's most important religious celebration each lunar year.

From Sekinchan, the route continues to Kuala Selangor, where Bukit Melawati (Melawati Hill) rises above the Strait of Malacca. The hill holds the remains of Kota Melawati fort and a lighthouse built in 1907 and operational since 1910. You can walk the grounds and photograph the structure, though entry inside is not permitted. The silvered leaf monkeys that inhabit the area are common sightings here. Before the evening's main event, your driver takes you to one of the waterfront seafood restaurants in the park or nearby, where dinner is set and waiting: beverages are on your own.

Once darkness falls, you board a boat for a ride through the mangrove swamps to hunt for fireflies. The area holds one of the world's largest firefly colonies, and the insects' glow against the dark water is the centerpiece of the evening. The boat tour concludes your day, and private transport returns you to your hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (2 to 11 years); Infant (under 2): free.

What are the Sekinchan paddy fields like when I visit?

Sekinchan's rice fields change color with the season (green during planting and golden during harvest) across roughly 4,300 acres in Selangor's main rice-producing district. The fields are visible from Nan Tian Temple's second-floor tower, which gives a clear view across the landscape.

Can I go inside the lighthouse at Kuala Selangor?

The Altingsburg Lighthouse, built in 1907 on Bukit Melawati, is not open for interior entry, but you can walk the grounds, see the antique cannon facing the Strait of Malacca, and take photographs from outside.

Will I definitely see fireflies on the boat ride?

The mangrove swamps near Kuala Selangor hold one of the world's largest firefly colonies, so sightings are likely, though the insects' visibility depends on weather and seasonal conditions.

What's included in the dinner at Kuala Selangor?

Dinner at a local seafood restaurant is set and included. The restaurants are located at the waterfront near the park. Beverages are not included and are on your own.

How much walking is involved in this tour?
