The experience
You arrive at Bukit Melawati, a hilltop crowned by a lighthouse and ringed with tall shady trees where silvered leaf monkeys and long-tailed macaques move through the branches. After exploring the hill and Fort Altingsburg, you head to a nearby fishing village for a set seafood dinner: local, simple fare that anchors the evening before the main event.
Around 6:30pm you board a boat at Kampung Kuantan with a life jacket provided. The boatman rows you along the Selangor River where millions of fireflies inhabit the branches of Berembang trees along the bank. About an hour after sunset, they begin their display: thousands group together on single trees and flash in synchrony, a sight often called the Eighth Wonder of the World. The brightest phase lasts two to three hours, then continues at lower levels until dawn. You watch from the boat as the river fills with flickering light.
The tour is private, so you travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with your own English-speaking guide and driver. All tolls, taxes and service charges are covered, as is the boat trip itself, though the boat is shared with other visitors once you're on the water. The whole outing takes about six hours from hotel pickup to return.

Is this one for you?Six hours is enough to see Melawati Hill, eat dinner and watch the firefly display from the boat, but leaves little room for other activities that evening. Choose this tour if you have a free afternoon and evening and want to spend them on a single immersive experience rather than fitting multiple stops into one day.
