The experience

The day starts at Batu Caves, where 272 steps lead up through a limestone cavern shrine to Lord Murugah, a Hindu deity. The complex holds three main caverns and several smaller caves. One, the museum cave, displays images and murals from Hindu scriptures. After time to explore and shop, you board the Awana Skyway cable car (Southeast Asia's longest and fastest), for a ride over the rainforest canopy up to Genting Highlands, a resort and casino complex sitting 6,000 feet above sea level.

Genting Highlands gives you roughly 4 hours of free time to walk the resort, visit the 4D cinema, try the splash pool, or play the games and rides scattered across the property. From there, the driver takes you to Kuala Selangor, a historical town where you stop at Bukit Melawati, a hilltop overlooking the Strait of Malacca with a lighthouse and the remains of Kota Melawati fort. Dinner follows at a waterfront seafood restaurant, then you board an electrically powered fiberglass boat at 8pm for a 15–20 minute ride along the Selangor River. The fireflies inhabit the branches of Berembang trees along the riverbank. The best visibility comes just after 8pm on a clear, moonless night, before they find mates and stop flashing. Your driver returns you to your hotel around 9:30–10pm.
