The experience
You're picked up from your Kuala Lumpur hotel and driven to Malacca, a port city whose architecture layers Portuguese, Dutch and British occupation into one walkable center. The tour moves through the landmarks that mark those centuries: the Porta de Santiago gate from the A'Famosa fortress (built in the 16th century and the oldest surviving European structure in Asia), the red-roofed Stadthuys that served as the Dutch city hall, and Christ Church, completed in 1856 on the site of an earlier Portuguese chapel. St. Paul's Church, built in 1521 and dedicated to the Virgin Mary, stands as the oldest church of its kind in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. Between the colonial squares you'll pass the Queen Victoria Fountain, still functioning after more than a hundred years, and the Red Clock Tower in Dutch Square.
Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, a UNESCO-recognized Chinese temple and one of the finest in Malaysia, sits among the spiritual sites the tour includes. The Kampung Kling Mosque, with its minaret styled like a Chinese pagoda, and Sri Poyatha Moorthi Temple, the oldest intact Hindu temple in Malaysia, show the religious diversity that shaped the city. Jonker Street, the main thoroughfare of Chinatown, is where you walk past shops selling antiques and souvenirs and stop for local food: Asam Laksa and Cendol are on the menu. The street hosts a night market on weekends, though the daytime walk gives you time to browse without the crowds. The Portuguese Square sits on the edge of the Straits of Malacca, where tourists and locals eat in the bright, colorful setting overlooking the water.
The vehicle is air-conditioned and private to your group. For one to three passengers it's a car, and for four to fifteen it's a van. Lunch and mineral water are provided. Travel time between Kuala Lumpur and Malacca is counted as part of the eight-hour total, so the day includes both the drive and the walking.
