The Experience
The day started with me almost forgetting my hat in the hotel lobby — I blame the early pickup (and maybe my own sleepiness). Our driver, Mr. Azlan, just grinned and waited patiently while I ran back for it. The drive out of Kuala Lumpur was quiet at first, but as we got closer to Melaka, he started pointing out little things — like how the palm trees change shape as you head south. I never would’ve noticed that on my own.
First stop: the Mini Malaysia & ASEAN Cultural Park. It’s a bit kitschy, but there’s something oddly comforting about seeing all these different houses lined up together. The air smelled faintly of rain on wood — or maybe that was just my imagination. At A Famosa fortress, I tried to picture what it must’ve been like when this place was actually a stronghold. Our guide told us stories about Portuguese sailors and storms; I’m still not sure if he was making some of it up for effect, but it worked on me.
Jonker Street was already buzzing by midday. We wandered past stalls selling everything from pineapple tarts to old coins. I tried saying “Cheng Hoon Teng” properly at the temple and got a polite smile from an older woman lighting incense — she corrected me gently (I’ll get it right next time). The mix of languages and smells — incense, fried snacks, something sweet I couldn’t place — made me feel both lost and right at home.
I didn’t expect to feel so moved at St. Paul’s Church ruins. There was this breeze coming off the hilltop and for a second everything went quiet except for some birds overhead. Our group just stood there, not really talking. Sometimes you don’t need words anyway.
