The drive from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca takes 2 hours each way, so the day is split between the road and the city itself. Once you arrive, the walking begins at Stadthuys, a 17th-century Dutch colonial building that still stands as one of Malacca's most recognizable landmarks. From there you climb St. Paul's Hill to St. Paul's Church, built in 1521 and the oldest church building in Southeast Asia—the views from the summit take in the city and the strait beyond.

A Famosa fortress comes next, its European stonework among the oldest surviving structures of its kind in the region. After lunch (which you arrange and pay for), your guide walks you down Jonker Street through Chinatown, where antique dealers, clothing shops and craft stalls line the narrow lanes. The street is also where you can stop for chendol, a local dessert of shaved ice, coconut milk, palm sugar, red beans and green jelly. Your guide also takes you to Cheng Hoon Teng, a Chinese temple blending Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism. A trishaw ride is included as part of the day, adding a different pace to the walking and the driving.
