The Experience

The day starts at Paneriai memorial park, where thousands of Jews from Vilna were killed during World War II. From there, the route heads to Trakai castle, a 14th-century fortress built on an island in a lake about 30 kilometers west of Vilnius. Depending on the season and day of the week, you'll either walk the grounds and see the castle from outside, or go inside if it's open — the operator can arrange a boat trip across the lake or a meal at a traditional Karaim restaurant if you want to extend the stop.

The final destination is Rumsiskes, one of Europe's largest ethnographic open-air museums, spread across 195 hectares. The exhibitions introduce five ethnographic regions of Lithuania — Dzūkija, Aukštaitija, Suvalkija, Žemaitija and Lithuania Minor — as they looked at the end of the 18th century and into the early 20th century. From May through October, you can enter the houses and see the interiors; from October through April, the outdoor exposition is available but indoor access is closed. The tour lasts between six and nine hours depending on how long you spend at each stop and which vehicle option you choose.

Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, so you don't arrange transport to the starting point. The guide speaks English and provides context at each site. Bottled water is provided during the day. Entrance tickets to Trakai castle are optional depending on which tour option you book; tickets to Rumsiskes are not included and are purchased separately on arrival.
