The experience
Six to eight hours gives you time to move through three separate landscapes without rushing. The tour starts with pickup from your Vilnius hotel and heads to Rumsiskes, where the open-air museum spreads across grounds with dwelling houses and economic buildings from different regions of Lithuania. You walk through them with your guide, seeing how rural life varied across the country. From October through May, the indoor exhibitions close, so the focus shifts to the exterior structures and the layout of the grounds themselves.
After Rumsiskes, the route continues to Pazaislis Monastery, a 17th-century Baroque complex set apart from the main towns. The monastery is closed Mondays, and when it is open, you can enter the interior to see the art and architectural detail. On other days, the exterior visit still shows the scale and style of the building. Lunch falls between the museum and the monastery, giving you a break in the day.
The final leg takes you to Kaunas, Lithuania's second-largest city and its capital between the world wars. The Old Town sits where the Nemunas and Neris rivers meet, and the tour covers its main sites: Kaunas Castle, St. George Church, Town Hall Square, the Jewish Quarter, and the Cathedral. Your guide handles the route and context. The driver brings you back to Vilnius at the end of the day.
