The experience

The day starts at your hotel and moves through Vilnius Old Town on foot with your guide, hitting the main Cathedral Square, the Presidential Palace, and Vilnius University. St. Anne's Church stands out for its Gothic ensemble. St. Peter and St. Paul's Church is one of the most ornate Catholic churches in Europe. Uzupis, a neighborhood across the river, holds the Angel of Freedom and Constitution monuments. The guide will point out why locals call it the "Republic of Uzupis."

After the Vilnius stops, you drive to Trakai, a lakeside town about 30 kilometers away. Lunch happens on your own there, then a guide leads you through Trakai Island Castle, a medieval fortress built on an island in the lake. The castle museum operates year-round, though hours shift by season: daily May through September, Tuesday to Sunday in spring and fall, and Wednesday to Sunday in winter. The drive back to Vilnius closes the day.

Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, as is the guide for the full six hours. The pace is set by the itinerary, not by you, so you move through each stop as the schedule allows. Lunch and drinks are on your own.

Top questions

What is Vilnius Old Town actually like when you walk through it?

Vilnius Old Town is Central Europe's largest medieval old town, with narrow streets, Renaissance and Baroque buildings, and the Cathedral Square at its center. The guide will show you the Town Hall, the Presidential Palace, and Vilnius University as you move through, plus the Gothic detail of St. Anne's Church and the ornate interior of St. Peter and St. Paul's Church.

How much time do you spend at Trakai Castle?

You arrive in Trakai around midday for lunch, then take a guided tour of Trakai Island Castle, a medieval fortress on an island in the lake. The exact time depends on the season and how the guide structures the stop, but it is the main event after Vilnius.

What if I visit in winter? Does Trakai Castle stay open?

Trakai Castle Museum operates year-round. December through February it is open Wednesday to Sunday, so plan accordingly if you are traveling in those months. Spring and fall (March, April, October, November) it opens Tuesday to Sunday, and May through September it is open daily.

Is lunch included in the tour?

Lunch is not included. You have free time in Trakai to eat on your own before or after the castle tour.

Can I bring a baby or small child on this tour?

Yes. Infants can ride in a pram or stroller, and specialized infant seats are available. Infants must sit on an adult's lap in the vehicle during the drive between Vilnius and Trakai.
