Cross into a forgotten corner of Lithuania where Stalin's pipe drew the border

A nine-hour day tour from Vilnius to the Dieveniskes isthmus (a strip of land only four kilometers wide, ringed by Belarus) with stops at Medininkai Castle, the Republic of Paulava ruins, and single-street villages that have kept their original structure since the 16th century. The tour includes hotel pickup, an English-speaking guide, local snacks and bottled water. You'll pass thousand-year-old oak trees and see Norviliskes Castle on the border itself.

The experience

The tour starts with pickup from your hotel and a drive 32 kilometers south to Medininkai Castle, one of the largest in Lithuania, built in the late 13th or early 14th century where the Lithuanian and Belarusian borders meet. From there the route moves through open terrain to Turgeliai, a small town named for the farmers' markets that once filled it, where a brief stop lets you see a beautiful church before continuing deeper into the region.

The heart of the day is the Dieveniskes Loop: the narrow isthmus Stalin's pipe created. In the 1930s, when Soviet officials were redrawing the Vilnius region's borders, Stalin's pipe was placed on the map and no one dared move it, so the border line was simply drawn around it. Today you pass through a checkpoint to enter this four-kilometer-wide strip of land completely surrounded by Belarus. Inside, you'll walk through 13 single-street ethnographic villages (Lastaučikai, Poškonys, Grybiškės and Rimašiai among them), whose street layouts date to the 16th and 17th centuries Valakas land reform, though most buildings themselves are from the late 19th or early 20th century. You'll also see the Grybiškės and Stakai oak trees, each over a thousand years old with trunks nearly five meters around, and a 100-year-old protected pine.

Before returning to Vilnius, the tour includes a stop at the ruins of the Republic of Paulava, an 18th-century autonomous peasant republic with its own constitution, parliament and money, and a visit to Norviliskes Castle, a 16th-century fortress sitting directly on the Belarus border. The route also passes Bėčionys hillfort on the Gauja River, where the view from the top opens across the surrounding landscape. The full day takes nine hours.

Is this one for you?The nine-hour length fits a full day of exploration, allowing time to move slowly through the villages and stop at each castle and hillfort without rushing. If you're traveling with young children, infant seats are available, though the remote border zone and long driving day work best for families with kids old enough to walk and sit comfortably for extended periods.

What is Medininkai Castle and why does it matter?

Medininkai Castle, built in the late 13th or early 14th century, is the largest castle in present-day Lithuania by area and sits directly on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border, 32 kilometers from Vilnius. It was built during the transition from Romanesque to Gothic style and is one of the earliest enclosed castles in the country.

What is Stalin's pipe and why is the border drawn around it?

Stalin's pipe is a literal pipe that Soviet officials placed on a map in the 1930s when redrawing the Vilnius region's borders. No one dared move it, so the border line was drawn around it instead, creating the Dieveniskes isthmus: a narrow four-kilometer-wide strip of Lithuanian land completely surrounded by Belarus.

What are the single-street villages and why do they look the way they do?

Thirteen ethnographic villages including Lastaučikai, Poškonys, Grybiškės and Rimašiai were formed by the Valakas land reform of the 16th and 17th centuries, which created their distinctive single-street layouts. Though their structure has remained unchanged, most of the buildings standing today were built in the late 19th or early 20th century.

Will I need to show documents at the isthmus checkpoint?

Yes, travelers may be asked to show documents when entering the Dieveniskes isthmus checkpoint, as it is a border zone. Your guide will be with you throughout this part of the tour.

What ancient trees will I see on this tour?

The tour includes the Grybiškės and Stakai oak trees, each over a thousand years old with trunks nearly five meters in circumference and cousins of the famous Stelmužė oak, plus a 100-year-old protected pine in the same area.
