The experience

I’ll never forget the quiet at Ponary Memorial Park. We’d just left Vilnius, still half-awake in the van, when our guide started telling us about the old ghetto streets we were passing. Inside, our guide pointed out details I would’ve missed: burn marks on old beams, tiny windows where you could see ducks drifting by on the lake below. There was this moment when we stood in a stone corridor and someone’s laugh echoed weirdly. I still think about that sound. We ended up back in Vilnius at Cathedral Square, kind of tired but also not wanting it to be over yet.
