The Experience

The safari starts with pickup at your Mombasa beach hotel and a four-hour drive inland on the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway, passing farmland and Kenya countryside with stops to stretch. Tsavo West opens with rolling hills and grassy savannah dotted with volcanic lava beds and oases. Game drives here turn up the big animals—lions, elephants, giraffes—but also smaller treasures like bushbaby, lesser kudu and dik-dik. After lunch, the route heads to a 90-square-kilometer rhino sanctuary holding over 80 of the park's endangered nocturnal rhinos; if luck holds, you'll spot one of the immense but shy creatures before settling into your lodge or tented camp for the night.

Day two starts before dawn. Mzima Springs, a spring-fed oasis in Tsavo West where the name means "life" in Swahili, draws hippo, crocodile, exotic fish and birds to its nourishing waters. You'll walk the shaded banks on foot, then spot zebra and giraffe drawn to the same source. The final game drive carries you south toward Amboseli Park—and as you cross into it, Mt. Kilimanjaro appears on the horizon, its white-capped summit framing the reserve's wildlife. The park's small size and sparse foliage make game spotting easier than in the vast Tsavo expanse. You'll have a relaxed afternoon to watch for animals before your second night.

Day three is the busiest. A pre-breakfast game drive at dawn may catch Kilimanjaro's white-capped summit in clear light, then a hearty breakfast fuels the journey ahead. On your final drive through Amboseli, you'll track lion, cheetah and hyena before saying goodbye to the park's enormous elephant herds. The route then heads north to Tsavo East, Kenya's largest national park, where the terrain is rugged and sparse—which makes game viewing more accessible. The elephants here roll in red oxide soil, earning the name "red-dust" elephants. Over 500 bird species inhabit the park. An afternoon of tracking and a sunset dinner close the day.

The final morning starts early. Tsavo East's famous watering holes—Mudanda Rock and Aruba Dam—draw every sort of species to share the life-sustaining waters. After a last game drive and breakfast, the two-to-three-hour drive back to Mombasa and the coast ends the safari.
