The experience

The matatu is how Nairobi moves. These minibuses run fixed routes through the city and its outskirts, packed with passengers, wrapped in bold graffiti inside and out, and fitted with sound systems loud enough to be heard blocks away. On this tour you don't watch them pass. You board two of them and ride. Your guide meets you at pickup and takes you to the matatu stage in the city center, where you'll climb aboard the first bus headed to Ongata Rongai, a settlement 17 km south of Nairobi separated from the city by the Mbagathi River. The ride itself is the point: the music, the packed seats, the way the vehicle moves through traffic, the other passengers going about their day.

Once you reach Rongai, you board a second matatu back toward the city center, then transfer to a third heading to Kasarani on another route known for its own fleet of decorated buses. On the way you'll drive the Thika Road, one of Kenya's major highway projects. The whole loop takes five to six hours. Bottled water is included. Local dishes and snacks are available at your own cost if you want to eat along the way. The tour passes through Eastlands neighborhoods where you'll see how the city extends beyond its center.

This is not a sightseeing tour with stops at monuments. It's a ride on the transport system Kenyans use every day, guided by someone who can explain what you're seeing and answer questions as you travel. The noise, the motion, the constant flow of people getting on and off. That's the culture.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 17 years). Under 3: they can't be included in the booking.

What exactly is a matatu and why is it such a big part of Nairobi?

A matatu is a minibus that runs a fixed route through the city, carrying passengers for a small fare. They're the backbone of Nairobi's public transport, and they're famous for their loud music systems, bright graffiti art covering every surface, and the way they pack in as many people as possible. Riding one is how most Nairobians get around.

Do I actually ride the matatus or just look at them?

You board and ride them. You'll travel on two different matatus during the tour (one to Ongata Rongai and one back through the city to Kasarani), so you experience the ride, the passengers, the music and the route exactly as a local would.

What is Ongata Rongai and why do we go there?

Ongata Rongai is a peri-urban settlement about 17 km south of Nairobi, separated from the city by the Mbagathi River. It's on the outskirts of the metropolitan area, and the matatu route there takes you out of the city center to show you how the transport system connects Nairobi to the surrounding areas.

How long does this tour take and when does it start?

The tour runs five to six hours total. Your guide picks you up from your hotel or location, takes you to the matatu stage in the city center, and then you ride the two routes before being dropped back at your starting point.

Can I eat or drink during the tour?

Bottled water is included. Local dishes and snacks are available along the way if you want them, but these are at your own expense and optional. You choose whether to stop and eat.
